Background

Mr. Satake, Senior Managing Director of Yukiguni Maitake Company (YMC) Ltd. was visiting Bangladesh to explore the possibility of growing mungbeans in Bangladesh. He met Professor Yunus to get his advice. After hearing about Mr. Satake’s plan, Professor Yunus gave a conceptual note to Mr. Satake to create a Social Business around the production and export of mungbeans. Mr. Satake liked the idea and presented Yukiguni Maitake Head Quarter to proceed with this idea. As a result Grameen Yukiguni Maitake Ltd. (GYM) was born as a Joint Venture Company (JVC) between YMC and GKF.
Now it is known as Grameen Euglena. YMC, Japan had transferred its share to another Japanese company named Euglena co., Euglena co., is a Japanese company which aiming to establish a carbon cycling society using the microorganism euglena. Euglena grows up using CO2 by photosynthesis. Euglena is highly rich in protein. It can be used as a food source for human being and also as feed of pets and culture fish. Mr. Mitsuru Izumu is the President of Euglena Corporation Japan. He started his business with the desire to solve the nutritional problems in Bangladesh, which he saw when I was a first-year university student and visited to Bangladesh as an Intern student of Grameen Bank in 1998. Mr. Mitsuru Izumo is now carry forwarding this great initiative of Mr. Yukoh Satake as he retired from this service.
